The 1908 Metz, Michigan, fire is an historical fact. Devil in the North Woods accurately traces its beginnings, progress, and devastating results. Newspaper accounts and documented interviews record the names and actions of those who survived, as well as those who did not, and formed the basis for much of the history in this book. Some of the characters in this book are either composites of real people or have been created solely for the fictional purposes of this book. Most of the conversations, details, emotions, and motivations have been fictionalized, although much has been drawn from 90 years of hand-me-down Hardies family stories.

Praise for Devil in the North Woods

Thanks to the writing ability of Walt Shiel, this catastrophic moment in history leaps off the page and into the hearts of readers.

In the Library Reviews

Written with the pace of a thriller, [this book] is a grim but fascinating read, building a bonfire of the pages of history.
Northern Express Weekly

Shiel's compassionate writing creates a community of bright, supportive, and determined people, whose characters develop and deepen as the fire grows…this novel never slows down, but leaves the reader with a great respect for the hardy, strong-willed people who fought and survived wildfires all across the States, and built up their lives in the aftermath.
Catherine Perkins
Historical Novel Society

Tell[s] a story that is highly readable, believable, and guaranteed to hold your interest from first page to last…This is first-rate writing that at times will leave you wondering whether it is fact or fiction but in a manner that does not deceive or talk down to the reader. Highly Recommended.

Devil in the North Woods vividly recreates the terrible blaze from start to finish, the toll it took, and the trials of human beings forced to recover from the devastating losses it inflicted. Though Devil in the North Woods tells the story of man vs. nature, its core is emotional and human-centered.
Midwest Book Review

The detail is so realistic and believable that it is easy to imagine yourself in this situation right alongside the characters in the book...This is more than the story of an out-of-control wildfire; it is the story of everyday heroes and the way they reclaim their lives after tragedy.
